Inlet Beach Porous Groin Demonstration Project

The Inlet Beach Porous Groin Demonstration Project is a unique opportunity for Walton County to evaluate experimental technology for addressing beach erosion on a limited scale. Based on results from the County’s in-house monitoring program and the Florida statewide monitoring program, only a 2000-ft segment of beach is critically eroded. The critically eroded beach is located between the eastern boundary of Rosemary Beach eastward to the Walton County Inlet Beach Regional Access, and is the location for the project. The project will utilize 10-11 porous groins installed perpendicular to the shoreline to slow the movement of a portion of sand that is moving along the beach. The system will not serve as a complete barrier and is discussed in more detail on the design page. The time period for installation will be from November 1, 2004 until April 30, 2005, completely outside of turtle nesting season. Additionally, a very robust Experimental Test Plan is being conducted throughout the installation period to document all effects that the project has on the beach system.
