Inlet Beach Porous Groin Demonstration Project Design

The design of the project consists of the installation of 10-12 porous groin structures perpendicular to the existing beach. The groins will be spaced between 100-150 feet apart and will serve as a partial barrier to sand moving down the shoreline. The expectation of the system is that the system will mitigate or reduce the amount of erosion that commonly occurs within the winter season. This will give the project area a head start to additional recovery when the normal spring recovery occurs. By implementing an intensive Experimental Test Plan throughout the installation period, all effects that the project has on the beach system will be determined. If negative impacts are caused within the project area or at any location near the installation area, the system will be modified and removed immediately. Below are two links that show the project design and an artist’s rendition of what the project will look like.
