After determining the health of our shorelines through the state of the beaches analysis in the Countywide Beach Management Feasibility Study, Taylor Engineering, Inc., our coastal engineering consultants, calculated the level of storm damage impacts that should be expected throughout the different areas of our beaches. This analysis was conducted for four levels of storms, a 10-year, 20-year, 50-year and 100-year storm. Not surprisingly, impacts in western Walton County are expected to be very high especially in storms that are greater than a 20-year storm. Currently, estimates of storm impacts to gulf-front structures are over 85% in the face of a category 2-3 hurricane, like Hurricane Opal in 1995. Each link shows a different location with the expected storm damage impact along the beach. The aerials progress from west to east. The purpose of the Western Walton County Beach Nourishment Project is to offer storm protection and is designed to eliminate most wave damages up to a 50-year storm event.
